Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Awful movie, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
This movie is terrible. The plot is horribly contrived and makes absolutely no sense, the acting and fake Irish accents are horrible, and there is no onscreen chemistry between Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Considering that they were married at the time, it really lends credance to the rumors circulating back then that their whole marriage was just a PR ploy.

The only way to watch this long movie is with the subtitles on and your DVD player on 8x fast forward. Good for speed reading practice.

And the only reason that I wrote this very short review was that I felt duped by all these five star reviews for this movie. There just aren't enough one star reviews on this movie to do it justice.

I can only guess that many of these other five star reviews were entered by Tom Cruise's infamous PR machine. I can't imagine that anybody in their right mind would rate this as a five star movie.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Far and Away Tom's Best
I'd never seen this and hadn't plans to do so, but it is a surprisingly pleasant entertainment. Cruise, who I dislike, is very good, very young, and makes a strong case for being star-material, in case one ever questioned his credentials. Kidman and he are totally believable as the romantic couple; although the rich girl/poor boy story is getting old, this one is done well. I liked the scenes of Ireland. New York is more persuasively depicted than by Scorsese's treatment of the same 'world' in his awful "Gangs of New York" which was operatic and overblown. Cruise is more believable as a boxer than DiCaprio, the better actor, who doesn't possess the physical energy Cruise has here. Overall, Howard is an intellectually less serious filmmaker than scorsese, of course, so the film has that old-fashioned how-the-west-was-won look, which no doubt is why critics didn't love this; it's too optimistic for the sour-puss crowd who only like to see America bashed and mocked. But here, as in "Apollo 13" you have Howard's enthusiastic celebration of the American dream. The film has little to be ashamed of, save for the fact that it belongs to a different, earlier era.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Far-Fetched and Away
An 'epic drama' this isn't. It felt more like a paint-by-numbers TV movie to me. A lot of cardboard-cutout characters and predictable plot devices. Was the ending ever in doubt? Nope. So where's the drama?

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Still a Great Movie
It is still a great movie. I had not seen it for sometime. My cousin is in the movie and she looks as great now as she did then also. I am glad I finally bought it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Good love story
This movie is one of my all time favorite romance films. If you are at home on a cold night this movie is a good one to curl up with. It is a very sweet and long immigrant tale and hardships that come with it.

Making pollen while the sun shines: Loyal readers, I'll be taking the next week off for some serious staycationing, enjoying the variable Seattle weather, playing with the kids, and generally relaxing. I hope you are all doing the same, wherever in the world you are.

I've heard it said by Dave Winer and many many others: if only Dean had reinvested half the money raised into the Internet, then ...

OK, so you're the Dean Campaign Chief Information Officer in August 2003. The money starts to roll in. $20 million over six months, $2-4 million per month.

What would you spend the money on?

  1. What does your monthly budget look like?
  2. What is your application and infrastructure portfolio?
  3. How much will you allocate to maintenance?
  4. You're building from scratch, so what problems do you hope to avoid through wise architecture?
  5. What are your big milestones?
  6. Who are your key vendors?

How do you spend in consonance with the campaign strategy?

  1. How will you use the Internet to bring offline voters into the campaign at the same numbers as radio or television broadcasts?
  2. What is your online strategy for responding to attack ads and opposition pundits in radio, television and print?
  3. Online community takes time to build and is very hard to organize geographically. What will you do to match the state-by-state primary schedule?
  4. What can you do with online services to serve the campaign in caucus states?
  5. You are preparing for Bush to launch in Spring 2004. What are your countermeasures to reach out to moderate Republicans online while the GOP uses its advanced voter email systems to barrage 200 million validated email addresses?
  6. How will you lower the cost-per-vote vs. the GOP?

U.S. companies are reining in IT spending as the economy continues to show weakness, a new survey has found.
