Editorial Review:

DescriptionHenry Winkler and Sally Field play two off-center characters who find love when they least expect it in the moving comedy Heroes. Jack (Winkler) is a troubled, yet high-spirited Vietnam vet who embarks on a cross-country odyssey to open a worm farm and prove his own self-worth. En route, he befriends Carol (Field) attempting to 'sort things out' before she marries an old flame. Their laugh and tear-filled adventures, including a high-speed run-in with a footloose army buddy (Harrison Ford), become the life-affirming story of two people who find themselves when they find each other.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - America Needs "Heroes"
Saw the movie at a drive - in - theater and was encouraged to "carry on" because I was really a wayward son.
Winkler shows his dramatic abilities best here to dream big, fall hard and allow himself to be redeemed by love.

America needs Heroes.
We need Heroes on DVD now!!!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Henry Winkler, the Jewish Al Pacino!
The first time I saw this movie was when I was 12 years old. The only reason I was it was because I had a crush on Fonzie and Han Solo. Needless to say, I didn't get much out of it back in those days. But seeing it again, 30 years later, I loved it. Henry Winkler's performance was so moving and powerful. His acting style reminded me of Al Pacino...he could be quiet and calm one moment then explosive, dangerous, and unprectable the next. It's too bad he hasn't played more crazy character's. He received a Golden Globe Nomination for this one.
Sally Field's was good as the runaway bride who decides to tag along with Jack (Henry's character) and then falls in love with him. Their on screen chemstry was very good.
The story was sad (with some funny moments). And I was left wanting the story to continue on even though I can't imagine these two ultimately having a happy ending. Unfortunately, love does NOT conquer all. Yes, I agree "Carry on my Wayward Son" was the better choice for the closing song.
I highly recommend this movie!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fine performances from a then-underrated cast
At the time of its release, "Heroes" had a cast trying to break out of stereotypical roles: Henry Winkler was typecast as the Fonz, Sally Field as The Flying Nun, and Harrison Ford as Han Solo. Winkler's days as a director, Field's as an Oscar favorite, and Ford as a major box office draw were years ahead. Winkler managed to overcome the nay-sayers with this sensitive portrayal of a traumatized Vietnam vet. Sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreakingly sad, "Heroes" is still an excellent movie nearly thirty years after its release. The ending, [...] still moves me to tears. A terribly underrated movie that deserves more respect. Highly recommend

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Fonzie Can't Act!
Ho-ly Cow. Henry must thank his gods every day for landing his TV gig. Every one of his movies are proof that he has ZERO acting talent. In this gem, he plays an obnoxious, "crazy" vet, traveling the country in seach of his old army buddy. For the whole movie he's carrying a shoebox of worms that remains in pristine condition despite Henry being soaked by rain. He tries to pull off a Fonzie kind of toughness with some rednecks, but without the greased hair, he comes off as laughable.

We're also expected to believe that his character could land a babe like Sally Field. PUH-LEASE!!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - POWERFUL ENDING RUINED....
I haven't seen this movie in about 20 years. I know that I really liked the movie but what always stands out in my mind was the Kansas song at the end and how fitting it was. Everytime I hear that song, Heroes comes to mind. I just bought the video and I'm going to just have to play the CD over the ending and mute the TV hahaha....

Hurricanes, as we've seen, can wreak serious havoc when they strike populated areas. We've never had control over them before, but one researcher thinks they could be broken up with F-4 fighter jets.

In theory, sending in a pair of the jets to do loops around the eye of the hurricane while it's still out over the ocean, creating sonic booms, would break it up before it hits the shore.

Jet fighters flying at supersonic speeds along special trajectories with a hurricane/typhoon at various altitudes would create supersonic booms. In one such embodiment, the trajectories for the supersonic booms of the present invention are counter to the rotational component of the hurricane and/or typhoon being targeted. As such, supersonic booms can be tailored and/or designed to partially and/or fully -negate the basic rotational contribution in a hurricane by slowing down a hurricane's/typhoon's rotation. Additionally, when supersonic booms propagate downward to the surface of the ocean they also destabilize a hurricane's/typhoon's structure by increasing the pressure in the central part of a hurricane's/typhoon's eye.

It's a pretty crazy idea, but I guess it makes sense. It would be pretty amazing to be able to stop any hurricane before it hit shore, saving millions and millions of dollars and who knows how many lives. I can't wait for them to test this out. [Patent via AV Web; Thanks, Jason!]

The fact that I'm able to type this blog entry less than a week after the operation has me hopeful that recovery will be quicker than I was led to believe, but it will still be a few weeks before I'm able to really tackle any serious work.
