Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Biblically Accurate and Wonderfully Inspirational - Highly Recommended
This made for TV movie does a wonderful job of translating the Old Testament book of Jeremiah to the screen. This is the last in a series of TV movies on various Old Testament books, and is probably the best of a great series. There are several things that struck me about this movie that I would like to share with potential buyers. First, and very importantly, this story sticks very close to the biblical text. It is a `minimalist' retelling of Jeremiah, there is little or no denominational `spin' on this story. It will be of interest to a wide range of Christian (and Jewish) believers. Second, this movie is just filled with wonderfully inspirational Biblical messages. The most fundamental is, of course, have faith in God, but this film examines issues of faith, submitting to God's will, and a host of others. Truly thought provoking for any Christian. Third, the acting, at least by the main characters, is quite well done. Fourth, the sets are fantastic. This was filmed I believe in Morocco, not in Jerusalem or anywhere else in Palestine, but the whole movie has a `Biblical' feel to it. If I had any negative complaint about the film, it would be that the performances of many (most?) of the supporting actors and actress was poor. They seemed stiff and not really interested in participating in the action. A (very) minor quibble though. A well written, well acted inspirational film that I highly recommend.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Beautiful story and great bible study
What an awesome way to learn about the stories from the bible! This movie is beautifully done.Good way to complement your bible study on the book of Jeremiah.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Patrick Dempsey as JEREMIAH Gives the Best Performance of All Nine Movies in this Series!
Patrick Dempsey turns in a perfect performance as the title character in JEREMIAH. He plays a humble prophet of God among the rebellious Israelites, as they are being taken over by Babylon, as punishment for turning away from God and living as they each saw fit, NOT as God had commanded them to live!

Jeremiah is chosen as a child to be the Lord's Prophet. He is disowned by his family and his countrymen for proclaiming what God tells him to say to the Israelites, but they can't silence Jeremiah because everything God tells him to say comes true!

The scribe named Baruch is his only friend during his persecuted mission. (BTW: in the Apocraphy Books of the Bible, Baruch has HIS own book named after Baruch).

Jeremiah's message is basically that the Israelites have sinned greatly and constantly against God, they have rejected repeated warnings from God's Prophets, and as punishment they are going to be exiled to Babylon, losing their own nation, except for a tiny remnant of impoverished citizens who are too lowly for even the Babylonian captors to want to bother kidnapping and taking back to Babylon.

Jeremiah is one of the longer books of the Bible, in the category of Major Prophets. The Bible covers a much longer stretch of Jeremiah's life, from childhood until old age. This film condenses the major points of the Bible book into his childhood and up until around age 30-ish. They hit all the themes of the Bible book, but have compacted the jist of the Scriptures about Jeremiah into a compact film of about 90 minutes.

The main difference from Scripture is in that this film adds a fictional character, a girlfriend, who is NOT in the Bible; but they use her character to explain the plight of the Jews in that day, while the shadow of Babylon approaches. The Bible DOES say that Jeremiah shall not marry and have a family, and this movie does not contradict that Scripture! The actress playing the girlfriend does a good job, and she's not in the film much, so I can easily forgive the filmmakers for adding her.

This movie is also sold in a pack, THE BIBLE SERIES BOX SET, (which also includes the equally good DVD movies of ESTHER and SOLOMON). Search for it on amazon.com. It is about 50% cheaper to buy all three movies at once, for less than $10 per disk, than to buy them separately. All three films are of high quality!

JEREMIAH is my favorite film of the LUBE Productions series of made-for-TV Bible movies from the mid 1990's. The rest of the DVD movies have finally been released on DVD in 2005. Search amazon.com for the BIBLE COLLECTION BOX SET (ABRAHAM, JACOB, JOSEPH, MOSES, SAMSON & DELILAH, and DAVID), which will also save you about 50% off compared to buying all 6 of those separately!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Finally - a movie about one of the prophets!
Not only is this a first rate movie, but it's one of the few films ever made that tells the story of one of the writing prophets. I use this film in the classroom and students are universally enthralled by it. When will Hollywood move on to the other great Biblical prophets? Amos, Isaiah, Hosea and all the others would make wonderful movies.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - search you`re self
rather then looking at this movie read or listen to the bible, here in this movie god is potray as a litle girl tha`s a one of the bigges sin, and abomination, the bible tell us god hinself call him to be a prophet not the angel of the lord nor a litle girl, is to much that people are cursing god all the time on movies of hollywood, and on tv and all type of sin been happening and trying to twis true ( only the wise will understand ).

Ted Shelton: "Frankly I felt that BlogOn was a waste of time and money."

I think the BlogOn conference was overproduced. In the name of professionalism the organizing firm turned off potential speakers, oversubscribed sponsors, etc.

I would have liked a debatable topic (aside from *blogging = journalism*. Two people slugging it out. Or a devil's advocate taking challenges from the floor.

I would have liked more hard numbers. Facts. Charts. Diagrams. We have the analytic tools to BS-check them; harder on vague opinions and single-points-of-observation.

I found it disturbing how much money was being commanded (from both attendees and sponsors) for a conference at a university. Maybe it was because it was at Berkeley? Maybe we should have taken over a community college or a Cal State or a DeVry. The facilities costs would have been cheaper at least. I heard an organizer apologize and say the next one would be at a hotel, like that would have been better.

Cost wasn't the whole problem. We're at a stage where early adopters are meeting folks who want to leap the chasm. Huge gaps in knowledge, experience, context, culture, vocabulary. It's the gap.

There are huge ideas to be explored, even in the world of applying blogs to media strategy and the enterprise. And most of the big ideas weren't even on the agenda at BlogOn. Probably because it was catering to those who want to commercialize, fund, and otherwise exploit (excuse me, "get in on") the emerging medium.

Let's fork these conferences so advanced topics on business and technology and culture fit the participants.

[a klog apart]

In a dusty supply closet at 1 Times Square, a computer terminal hooked up to hordes of ethernet servers, RAID arrays and monitors humbly runs the largest LED sign in the world. The sign, a 3-sided, 17,000-square-foot Goliath, debuted last night at the opening of a Walgreens in New York City. Today, I got to see what makes it tick.

Each side of the sign, designed by D3 LED, requires a 48-drive RAID pumping data at a rate of 3.2GB/second to a custom-built PC. From there, the data is fed through graphics cards to multiple DVI pipes, which lead to six DVI pixel splitters (known as a Spyders). The splitters take video data of a specific resolution and upscale it to the size needed for the display. Once the data is crunched and formatted for the sign, it's sent out via 4Gbps ethernet to one of more than 12,000 display modules that make up the ginormous billboard.

Each module is a mini-computer, complete with MAC address, redundant 4-gigabit ethernet ports, power supply and a fan. Each panel can report all kinds of vital statistics, including its temperature. If there's a problem, the panel reports itself to the main computer for easy troubleshooting. (Like a good communist, it can report problems with its neighbors, too.) The majority of the electronics are accessible from inside, so dangerous repair jobs on scaffolding suspended over Times Square are a thing of the past.

The sign's modules are split into three sections, low-, medium- and high-resolution grids based on their distance from the street. (Why waste pixels for objects way high up?) The top, as you probably guessed, has the largest pixels, at 24mm, while the middle has 12mm and the bottom has 10mm.

The animators are faced with a tough challenge when creating content for the signs, as they must keep the different display sizes in mind so the animation appears cohesive throughout the sections. To help out the animators, sign creator D3 LED made a virtual copy of it that is 10,000 pixels high by 4,000 pixels wide, the equivalent of 43 megapixels. (It's 20 times the resolution of HD, too.) They use an Adobe After Effects template to help coordinate placement of the animations on the slash-shaped sign.

As previously reported, a single 30-second spot on the billboard requires a staggering 150GB of data transferred through the system. But before you accuse D3 and Walgreens of hogging all of the power in New York, they attest that they are not. With the Con Ed bill in mind, their design reduced unnecessary copper wiring by over 300,000 feet and increased the voltage for more efficient power. They also set up an auto-dimmer (like you might have on your laptop) that adjusts the luminosity of the LEDs based on the ambient light outside. All of this makes it not necessarily cheap but at least cheaper than you'd think to operate.

The Walgreens sign is a complex, fascinating testament to the sheer power of LED displays. While most people living in New York avoid Times Square exactly because of things like this, tourists will undoubtedly flock to the center to observe the sign up close, even though it can be seen from as far away as Bryant Park and the Port Authority. For now, it's something that even this semi-jaded NYC resident can appreciate. [Walgreens Sign on Giz]

Massive energy releases occur every day in the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere. Lightning may give rise to these bursts of radiation. However, unlike the well-known flashes of light and peals of thunder familiar to Earth-dwellers, these energy releases are channeled upward and can be detected only from space. Our atmosphere protects us from the effects of this radiation, but the mechanisms at work can impact Earth's upper atmosphere and its space environment.
