Better than the reviews had led me to believe
I hadn't ever picked this up because the user reviews were so bad, but I recently found it for five bucks at Fye's and figured what the heck. As it turns out, it was much better than I expected.
The action in this was pretty well done and entertaining -- there was quite a bit of it, and it was pretty epic. The final battle was long, and overall exciting.
The characters weren't badly done either. Superman, Clark, Lois, Jimmy, Perry were all handled well. Lex was a bit too comical -- a little too much like the vastly overated Donner Superman movies, kind of along the lines of Singer's Supes Returns Luthor -- certainly not on the level of the rest of the Tim-verse Clancy Brown voiced Luthors. He wasn't bad, but he wasn't as ruthless, sharp, or intimidating. Powers Boothe -- who normally has an incredible voice -- seemed to try to raise the pitch of his voice a bit and to make it more nazely, which didn't quite work for me either. Clancy Brown has been the difintive Luthor to date, but again, this wasn't horrible. Certainly better than the Gene Hackman Luthors and about on a par with Kevin Spacey's. The truth is, Clancy Brown can do a funny Luthor without losing any of his intensity or ruthlessness, and that's what directors should be going for -- a very confident, compitent Luthor with a dry, intelligent, mean wit.
Overall the animation was well done. A couple times I thought things looked a little loose, and I won't say the animation was much (or at all) better than a JLU episode -- but JLU had some pretty darn good animation. The recent Superman/Doomsday and Marvel straight to DVD movies have been better animation wise, but this was not bad.
My only story complaint would be the Phantom Zone element that helps Supes overcome his Kryptonite poisoning. The element was never heard of before and has never been heard of since, and it just seemed too out of nowhere. The rest of the story worked pretty well (especially as an action delivery vehicle) and there are some good character moments to close things out. Luthor has a couple of really corny lines designed to (as I said above) make him a bit more comical and Gene Hackman/Richard Donner like (I think,) but the rest of the dialogue is decent.
Was this the best of the DC or Marvel straight to DVD movies? No, but it was certainly much better than one or two stars. Three stars would be fair because of the Phantom Zone element and the comical Luthor, four if you're an action fan like myself. One or two I don't get at all. I'm glad I finally bought it. It's a fun way to spend an hour and a half. Not the best ever, but not bad either.

Someone has to stand up for it
After watching every Superman video to date, I finally picked up this one at a story because it was on sale for seven bucks. I had read all the reviews here, and with low expectations I decided I'd finally bite the bullet and watch what is considered an abhoration to Superman.
I liked it. I think it's highly underrated. It's entertaining, exciting, and has plenty of "ah, that's cool" moments that Superman should deliver. While many complain about the plot, I see no problem with it. I found it interesting with a few twists and a lot at stake. Sure there are some Deus Ex Machina, but it's Superman, when aren't there?!
I also didn't mind the new voice for Brainiac. It wasn't as good as the original, but he did fine! If he did a poor job, then we can slam him.
Which is why we can slam Lex Luthor. This is, no doubt, a horrible Lex. Sometimes he's really good, but often this Lex is weird and stupid. He says some things that people had to know were a bad idea. "I'm happy, no wait, I'm saaaad." and "Mercy make some popcorn." Are some good examples. But he isn't on screen too often, and sometimes he comes off as the evil man he is.
I think the movie has more action than the recent "Superman: Doomsday." While Doomsday was a better movie, this one is fine for what it is. It does get a little childish at times, but overall I'd say the action is stout and the story is fine. If you can get around a few horrible Lex lines, a Superman fan can defintely enjoy this entertaining movie.

Very Disappointing Experience for one SupermanTAS fan
What can I say about this movie that has not already been said? This movie will probably be fine and enjoyable for younger kids and others who may not have watched the extremely well-done Superman: The Animated Series. However, fans of the show, like myself, will cringe and roll their eyes when watching this movie. The story is actually OK - it could pass for a weaker three-episode series in Superman TAS. However, there are three things that are unbearable: First, Booth Powers' interpretation of Lex Luthor was unwatchable (unlistenable?). His comedic approach to the character made him sound like some character out of the old Hanna Barbera cartoon school of villainy (No wait - make that the Rankin-Bass school of villainy). Why couldn't they have used the excellent talents of Clancy Brown? They thought this was an improvement? Second, the voice of Brainiac, why not as bad, was completely non-descript, boring, and really not that threatening. Once again, why would they mess with Corey Burton's defining voice characterization from Superman TAS? One explanation may be that Andrea Romano was not involved in the voice casting for this movie. Third, the music was not just bad, it was annoying after a while; it literally grinds into your brain. The music track is tinny, distant and cliche - it was reminiscent of the electronic background music of a mid-1990's Nintendo game. OUCH. If you are a complete-ist, you will probably purchase and watch this movie (I resisted it for 2 whole years) - but don't say I didn't warn you.
