Editorial Review:

DescriptionThree arrive…one survives. Wealthy businessman Jack Matson (Billy Zane) and his beautiful wife Jennifer (Kelly Brook) are on a vacation in the Caribbean. Their vacation is cut short, however, when handsome Latin boatman Manuel (Juan Pablo Di Pace) accidentally causes the yacht to sink. Washed ashore a remote island and left for dead, Jack and Jennifer find that they must fend for themselves if they are to survive. But when they find that they are not the only survivors on the island, a primal and erotic tale of survival and jealousy ensues when Manuel appears and develops an attraction to Jennifer. As life becomes more and more competitive--and dangerous--on the island, Jennifer must decide to follow her heart or her instincts if she is to survive.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - BLAH
VERY SLOW AND BORING. NOT A FAMILY MOVIE AT ALL. BEFORE SPENDING MONEY TO RENT IT SEE IF YOU CAN CATCH IT ON TV.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Just Awful
I came across Survival Island late one night and decided to check it out. I love the islands so seeing it was shot in the tropics immediately caught my eye. Unfortunately the scenery was completely overshadowed by some of the worst acting I have ever seen. The plot was good and they really could have made this a great movie, but they didn't. Even beauty queen Kelly Brook couldn't save it.

I am a fan of all movies and really enjoy the B variety. You know they type of movies that are so bad they're great. This didn't even fall into the category. The fact that everytime they needed food they just swam out and caught lobsters and fish whenever they wanted was just hilarious. There were so many holes in the plot I wouldn't know where to begin. I am assuming any good reviews are because you got to see a topless Kelly Brook from time to time. That would be the only logical reason for saying you enjoyed this movie.

I would definately say this was a waste of time and really isn't even laughable enough enjoy. However I will say if you are a Kelly Brook fan then you may enjoy it.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not a complete waste of time...
I watched this on cable tv the other night [for want of something better], and actually found it watchable, mildly entertaining even. The plot isn't exactly new...it centers around three people, a wealthy couple, Jack and Jennifer [played by Billy Zane & the sexy Kelly Brook]who together with their boatman Manuel [Juan Pablo di Pace] find themselves marooned on a remote island after a boating accident. The dialogue seems contrived throughout the movie, but what actually keeps this afloat is the above average acting by Billy Zane, as the insanely jealous husband, and the sexy performance by Kelly Brook. The conflict between the two men over Jennifer is palpable, and there is great chemistry between Jennifer and Manuel. It isn't a great movie, not even good, but watchable.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Sucked
You know those movies that make you feel sick and disgusted, and wish you didn't see the movie to begin with. Well, this is one of those movies. Man, those writers in Hollywood have no class or morals. I don't know what they paid Kelly Brook to do the movie, but I'm sure she realizes now it wasn't worth it.

For years, architects have gone to great lengths to protect their buildings from marauding skaters. But as aesthetic trends move toward folded planes that transition seamlessly from wall to ceiling and back to wall, designers have been looking to their former adversaries for a lesson in flow.

"We have this fascination with buildings becoming topography," says Alejandro Zaera-Polo, a partner at London's Foreign Office Architects, "and skateboarders have that physical experience." So for a park in Barcelona, his firm extended paving stones up the sides of small hills—to shield vegetation from salty sea breezes. At least that's what it told city officials. But skaters got the message. The resulting quarter-pipe landed on the March 2006 cover of Transworld Skateboarding.

Architect Zaha Hadid shares the love. She wanted her Phaeno Science Center in Germany to be an all-inclusive venue for pedestrians and skateboarders alike. Liability issues prevented skate-park designation—though you'd never guess it from the YouTube videos of pro skaters "visiting" the museum. "We design spaces that are flowing and continuous, and—just by coincidence—skateboarders look for that kind of continuity," Dillon Lin, an architect (and skater) at Hadid's firm, says with a wink.

And though the new Oslo Opera House (shown here) was inspired by the image of two glaciers colliding, the architects at Snøhetta didn't call on glaciologists to help fine-tune the details. They enlisted real experts in twisted planes: skateboarders. "We spoke to them about surface textures and the areas they prefer," architect Simon Ewings says. His firm followed up the conversation with a statement in stone.

Snøhetta used different finishes of marble to guide skaters looking for rideable surfaces. Acoustically sensitive parts, like above the auditorium, got rough marble that's unpleasant to wheel over. But other areas silently beckon skaters. Surfaces rise up all over the place to become ledges, curbs, and benches—like the jagged facets of a glacier (or skate park). One particularly tempting spot is a 3-foot-wide railing of smooth stone. Snøhetta architect Peter Dang is, ahem, absolutely sure it's skatable. "Just make sure to fall toward the inside," he advises.

Tricked Out

The new Oslo Opera House is much more than a temple to the vocal arts. It's a palace of thrash, with as many gnarly facets as the best skate parks. Here are some key features and suggested moves.

Stair Ledge =
50-50 Grind
Marble Bench =
Kick Flip
Sloped Plaza =
Bert Slide
Upper Level =
Acid Drop
Pedestrian Ramp =
Downhill Slalom
Walkway Balustrade =

The proposed acquisition of Macromedia by Adobe is not a done deal. Both companies are under the scrutiny of the SEC, and it must also be approved by stockholders. While Macromedia/Adobe gives this process three to nine months, some industry analysts feel that is being overly optimistic. But assuming that all is goes as planned, Macromedia will cease to exist. Everything will be in the Adobe name and with the Adobe interface.

Paul Glen says that fear of layoffs is a de-motivator for creative problem-solvers like those in IT.
