Stay away
I might have liked this in my 20's. I found the movie through an amazon link from the movie Off th Map(my favorite). I think this could have been a beautiful movie but for some reason the writer/director needed to throw in sexual taboos and some unnecessary violence. I can handle this stuff from Tarrantino but I just think everything seemed forced and overall a wasted opportunity for a great environmental movie that made us think.

An Expirement
I liked this movie. First the cinematography was just grand and full of rich and beautiful color. I thought that Daniel Day Lewis was great as usual and the very underrated Katherine Keener was also very good. This is a simple and complex story all rolled into one. But it is different and something that is creative. I don't think it is for everone but I think that for the thinking man or woman who appreciates good film, I think you will like it.

Jack,Rose,Thaddius,Berry Red......too weird for me in this wild "Brady Bunch" of the islands
THE BALLAD OF JACK AND ROSE is a disturbing look at what happens when.....oh who am I kidding...this film was downright weird! I certainly have loved my share of "dysfunctional" or "bizarre" people, but this one just didn't connect with me on any level. These characters are severely handicapped and their actions and reactions to everything in life has no solid foundation for any kind of functional happiness outside of some kind of "communal existence".Jack (Daniel Day-Lewis)raised his daughter Rose in communal life in the 1970's.Roses' mother left (we do not know if there was a marriage or why she left),but nevertheless Rose has lived alone with her father, secluded from the outside. The relationship is disturbing and creepy, yet understandable in light of the circumstances. There seem to be no boundaries established, and as Rose begins to blossom into womanhood, she and her father become aware that something is missing. This film sets us up for a near ultimate mistake. We see it coming from the very beginning. This is what happens when children become mates instead of offspring!
Jack's heart is failing, so he asks his kind-of girlfriend (Catherine Keener) and her two really disturbed children to move into his communal home. They set up house. It is uncomfortable for everyone. This is THE BRADY BUNCH gone hippie! (Keener even hums the theme to the show!).Rose is jealous of the new woman in the house and tries to kill her twice! WHAT?...Rose wants to get laid, so she asks both of her new "brothers! WHAT?...she even asks the fellow who delivers flowers to teach her to kiss and he is way older? WHAT?...are you getting the gist of this film? It is just too weird for even me, who lived this life, somewhat, even in my own childhood; but this script is just too off the beaten path even for me!.Throw in the encroaching land development nearby and this film just strays completely. The acting is fine in all respects, but I am asked here to say whether I love or hate a film.I disliked it intensely.Only some of my favorite actors made this senseless film even remotely watchable.A total throwaway DVD with no extras.

Richer with every viewing
Of course Daniel Day-Lewis is incredible. Of course the script by Rebecca Miller, daughter of Arthur, is inspired. Of course the visuals are lovely. But this intimate, unusual story really does take you by surprise (against all odds). It's sort of a disturbing tale, though, so it's only for you if you like upsetting little films such as The Sweet Hereafter and the like.

Beautiful movie
Every character in this movie speaks to me in a certain way. They seem to reflect the characters of people from my past.
I give this DVD to people as a gift, all the time. I recommend it highly.
