Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Wire: FIfth Season
Again, The Wire excels in exposing the grim effects of post-industrial America. This season's focus on the declining significance of print media in the face of the explosion of digital communication, with the socio-political landscape of Baltimore, Maryland looming, adds to this series' lore and placement to fans and critics as one of the most important shows ever. From street corner politics and its policing to the closed-door deal-making in city government, The Wire ends its five-year run with the brilliance and breathtaking precision that has now become part of the show's long list of virtues. Returning fans can expect to see their characters continue to grapple with life's choices - professional and personal - as well as its limitations, with the same gritty honesty the show's creators have maintained throughout. New fans, be prepared for a stinging commentary on today's post-industrial urban landscape. For starters, watch seasn's 1 through 4 first, you wont be disappointed. The complicated lives of the characters and the creator's commitment to the story's accuracy evolves over the five seasons though each season has its own targeted theme. It will also help to search for some commentary from Dave Simon and Ed Burns on the show's purposes. The Wire is extraordinarily entertaining, and it is also a graduate course into contemporary America. There will be no note-taking and there will be no math, but this class is no cake-walk. Enjoy every riveting minute.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - GREAT TV FOR ADULTS
IT IS SO NICE TO VIEW SOMETHING MADE FOR TV THAT IS NOT MADE FOR THE TEN YEAR OLD IN YOUR HOUSE. THE WRITING IS GRITTY AND DOWN TO EARTH. IT MAKES YOU KNOW THIS IS REAL LIFE. THE CHARACTERS ARE SO FLAWED YOU TEAR UP, BUT SOMETHING IS ALWAYS HAPPENING TO MOVE THE STORY ON . AT SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE THIS SERIES WILL BECOME ONE OF THOSE THAT ALL OTHERS ARE JUDGED BY.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - McNultty, what're ya thinking?!
What a great series, I'm truly sad that we only got five brilliant seasons of The Wire. I can no longer watch shows like CSI and Law & Order, even at there best they don't come close.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - As Close To The Real Streets As You Can Get
As a black man who grow up on the mean streets of an east coast city, this series is about as close to the real streets as any "TV" series has ever gotten. This is one of HBO's least talked about but absolutely best series ever. Difficult to watch (my wife could not watch it), but as I told her we turn away at our own peril because there are people like the characters in this series in every major city in American, I know because I grow up with some of them. Remember them and the situation I grow up in made me mentally tough enough to survive Iraq. Sure there were a couple of stumbles and some "over-the-top" moments but overall you can feel the reality and grit coming off the screen. The characterizations, the despair, and feeling of hopelessness are real and something that I can easily identify with. Had not decided to get out and did the only thing I thought I could to get...joining the Army, and getting a education in process, I might have ended up as one of the hopelessly lost, angry, violent, and confused black men that this series depicts. And make no mistake, that's what this series is about. You may think it's another crime drama about the cops who are battling to keep a lid the madness but it's not...it's about how we have allowed whole generations to become lost. Watching this series had me asking one essential question...am I my brother's keeper. As long as we...all of us, fail to step up, we will be reading about or seeing the same kinds of destruction and despair that the comes with the inner city drug culture, and it's shocking violence.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Hate that this series ended....
If you have watched the Wire ever...then this is a MUST HAVE. The final season brings everything full circle without leaving you disappointed. There is no truer tale of the streets that can be seen in modern times other than the Wire. This is a classic that you will watch over and over again for many years to come! R.I.P. OMAR!!!!!

At Gartner's Symposium/ITxpo conference, the possibility of hiring freezes or layoffs was the top item on the consulting firm's list of things IT managers should prepare for in light of the financial meltdown.

We've written about the amazing iLIMB bionic hand before, but the newest version of it was showed off on the Today Show this morning, and it looks pretty incredible.

For one, the guy who had it was able to simply pop one off and put another on without skipping a beat, with the new hand working almost instantly. He seemed able to control the fingers easily, and he had the added bonus of being able to rotate the hand 360 degrees, which is something those of us with fleshy, non-bionic hands are unable to do. In the future, bionic hands won't be replacements for real hands; they'll be upgrades.

Ted Shelton: "Frankly I felt that BlogOn was a waste of time and money."

I think the BlogOn conference was overproduced. In the name of professionalism the organizing firm turned off potential speakers, oversubscribed sponsors, etc.

I would have liked a debatable topic (aside from *blogging = journalism*. Two people slugging it out. Or a devil's advocate taking challenges from the floor.

I would have liked more hard numbers. Facts. Charts. Diagrams. We have the analytic tools to BS-check them; harder on vague opinions and single-points-of-observation.

I found it disturbing how much money was being commanded (from both attendees and sponsors) for a conference at a university. Maybe it was because it was at Berkeley? Maybe we should have taken over a community college or a Cal State or a DeVry. The facilities costs would have been cheaper at least. I heard an organizer apologize and say the next one would be at a hotel, like that would have been better.

Cost wasn't the whole problem. We're at a stage where early adopters are meeting folks who want to leap the chasm. Huge gaps in knowledge, experience, context, culture, vocabulary. It's the gap.

There are huge ideas to be explored, even in the world of applying blogs to media strategy and the enterprise. And most of the big ideas weren't even on the agenda at BlogOn. Probably because it was catering to those who want to commercialize, fund, and otherwise exploit (excuse me, "get in on") the emerging medium.

Let's fork these conferences so advanced topics on business and technology and culture fit the participants.
